USP, USC thrash rivals in Kwarta Padala Cup

Dennis Earven Ferarren and Sam Jordan combined forces anew to lift the University of Southern Philippine (USP) Baby Panthers past hard-fighting Hoop It Up, 67-53, in the BAP-Visayas/MLSDF ML Kwarta Padala Cup Inter-Secondary Basketball Championship at the Consolacion Sports Complex Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors nipped the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 76-52, to join other Group A winners.

The game was fought closely for 37 minutes before Hoop It Up, composed mostly of players from the Cebu Institute of Technology, lost steam in the final four minutes and allowed the Baby Panthers to catch up.

Hoop It Up last held the lead at 50-44, midway in the fourth quarter, when Ferraren, Hermosa and the towering Ybañez towed USP to a 58-50 lead, en route to their win.

Started hot

Ferraren led USP with 20 points, while Hermosa added 18. Kaim Ian Alvarez scored 20 for Hoop It Up and the wily playmaker, Eliezar Del Mar, made 17 markers.

In the other game, the Carolinians started hot against the undermanned USJ-R.

With the Baby Warriors keeping a balanced offensive, the Baby Jaguars could not get a good start with only Anecito Lapiz and Yballe sharing the scoring duties.

Lapiz and Yballe finished with 13 points each while Kevin Jake Arriesgado paced USC with 11 in the tournament also known as the Mayor Gungob Cup 3.
