UV, USJ-R renew rivalry in Aboitiz Cup

After facing each other in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football finals, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and the University of the Visayas (UV) are set to bring their rivalry into a higher level - the Aboitiz Men’s League First Division.

The two-division Men’Aboitiz League starts Sunday at the San Roque Football grounds.

Last Sunday, UV ended USJ-R’s string of four straight Cesafi titles with an anticlimactic 4-0 finale.

No Blowouts

There won’t be easy blowouts in the men’s league as the USJ-R’s alumni, some of whom witnessed the fall of their mighty team last Sunday, are eager to seek revenge.

This time around, UV will be donning the colors of defending champion Hiroshi FC, while some players will play for UV in the second division. USJ-R will also be reinforced by its alumni, members of the champion squads in the previous four Cesafi seasons.

In last year’s Aboitiz Cup, Hiroshi defeated USJ-R, 1-0, in the elimination and did it again in the semifinals, 2-0, before winning the title over Exas FC, 2-0. Exas has since disbanded and its players scattered in the other teams in the league.

The 2005 Cesafi season also marked the downfall of the once mighty Jaguars as it lost earlier to UV, 0-2, and to the University of Southern Philippines Foundaiton 1-2.

Meanwhile, Cebu Football Association president Jonathan Maximo is set to meet with coaches today for the submission of the teams’ line-ups. Those who fail to submit their lists today will not be allowed to see action in the League.

Regional meet

“I think we will start with the Division A first so that we will have time to choose our representative for the regional meet,” Maximo said.

Other teams in the League are Crazy Horse FC, USPF, University of San Carlos, Queen City United, Don Bosco Alumni FC, Mactan FC, Magone FC, University of Cebu, Cebu Institute of Technology, Metropolitan FC, Danao FC, FC International Cebu, San Roque FC, Wild Cebu FC and CSCST. (ML)
