Yap wins crown in Rose chess

Making up for a disappointing performance in a recent national competition, Kim Steven Yap pocketed the Rose Pharmacy active chess tournament October edition after an emphatic final-round victory Sunday at SM City Cebu.

Yap, who failed to bring home a medal in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship grand finals in Manila a week earlier despite being one of the pre-event favorites, went undefeated after seven rounds in claiming the Rose chess title.

Cesafi gold

A gold medalist in the recent Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. college chess event, where he powered the University of San Carlos to a tie for first place before eventually losing in the tiebreak to the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Yap scored a thrilling win over grizzled veteran and blitz-chess expert Antonio Cabibil in the final round to hike his tally to 6.5 points.

Cabibil, a stalwart of the Virginia Foods Inc. chess squad, was relegated to the fifth spot with 5.5 points.

Top 10

Three players tied for the runner-up spot with six points apiece. Voltaire Sevillano, who outplayed Santiago Peque in the final round, emerged with the best tiebreak score to secure second place, while Bahneh Tabada, who beat Francisco Abugho, settled for third.

No.2-seed National Master Arnold Cadiz outplayed Argao Open champion Anthony Makinano in the final round to likewise post six points and grab the fourth spot.

Brothers Eden and Harold Diano placed sixth and seventh, respectively, while NM Carlo Sludsod, Ramsy Pedrosa and Abugho rounded out the top 10.
