Cedf-it, IBM help Cebu in workforce development

Cebu is making great strides in building a solid foundation in information and communications technology (ICT). But the context within which Cebu’s competency in ICT is emerging is dynamic. Success increasingly depends on a knowledge-based economy adaptive to a networked world. This presents both incredible opportunities and formidable challenges. To exploit global market opportunities requires a multi-pronged approach that spans the public, private and civil society sectors.

The Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it), under the auspices of the Provincial Government of Cebu’s ICT Council, is collaborating with IBM Philippines (with resource facilitators coming all the way from the US) to proactively map out Cebu’s journey towards greater competitiveness. As known by many, such an ambitious endeavor is one of evolution and that the long-term success, particularly in the fast-moving ICT and ICT-enabled services, ultimately depends on the people. To build, align, harness and direct the potential and skills of people–Cebu’s workforce–will require cross-sectoral institutional capability, capacity and commitment.

Another milestone will highlight this “work in progress” as Cedf-it and IBM collaborate in the “Cebu ICT Workforce Development Discovery Workshop” on Nov. 14 and Nov. 17 to 19 at the Cebu Provincial Capitol session hall, Osmena Blvd., Cebu City.

Around 40 respected leaders from the ICT and IT-enabled services industry, the academe, the government, which includes the Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology and the nongovernment sector, including World Corp., Cebu Software Development Industry Association, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Internet Café Association of Cebu, Cebu Computer Society and Aboitiz Group Foundation Inc. are expected to take an active part in the four-day intensive workshop.

To succeed in the networked world, the information society reminds all sectors that no one player can deliver the broad goals that Cebu seeks to achieve. The ability to collaborate, innovate and execute—as one—gives Cebu the competitive edge in ICT. The abiding, valuable and generous contributions of every stakeholder will ensure and sustain the success of this ongoing initiative.
