Costanilla: Mabuhi
By Sam Costanilla

SONG. There are moves for a very nice Paul Melendez composition to be adopted as the official hymn of this great province of Cebu. Mabuhi, which Melendez wrote a few years back, has impressed Governor Gwen Garcia so much that she has asked Board Member Juan Bolo to sponsor a Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution for the adoption of the song as provincial hymn.

As of this writing, the Sanggunian has yet to deliberate on the issue. Personally, I am for the adoption of Mabuhi as Cebu’s provincial hymn. It’s a very magnificent composition that talks about the Cebuano spirit of brotherhood to promote national unity. I remember we used to sing Mabuhi before the start of the weekly meeting of an informal social club whose media forum I used to moderate. Just in case you forgot, Melendez was the genius behind Make Believe popularized by Marco Sison. Not to mention his being a prize-winning composer in previous Cebu Popular Music Festivals.

WINNER. I was elated to know that a Tagalog film which was shot entirely in Cebu was chosen as best picture in the recent Catholic Mass Media Awards in Manila. The Jeffrey Jeturian-directed movie Minsan Pa, originally titled Usahay, was picked by a panel of jurors to deserve the prestigious award because of its excellent plot and treatment. One of those behind Minsan Pa’s production was a Cebuano lady lawyer in the person of Joji Alonso of MLR Films.

ENCOURAGE. I hope Minsan Pa’s recent victory could encourage Alonso to come up with another movie that shall again feature Cebu sights and spots. It’s something that local writers and stars can look forward to.

RESIGN. The young male host of a recently-launched television game show here has just resigned. According to him, he could no longer stand the system and style of some people behind the show. Some observers say the new show might not be able to sustain the viewers’ interest in the next few months. They are even saying the new show is on the verge of folding up. Is that so?

CONTEST. My good friend Atty. GingGing Navarro e-mailed to invite local schools to send theircontestants to an on-the-spot poster-making contest whose aim is to heighten public awareness of solid waste management at a level that offers the most hope- the schoolchildren. She wrote that on November 13, at around 1 p.m., the Kalikupan Law Group in cooperation with the Cebu city government, Globe Telecom and Ayala Center Cebu will conduct the art competition at the mall’s activity stage. As a requirement, Navarro added, each participating school is asked to submit an undertaking for a solid waste management project and the school whose contestant wins first place will receive a corresponding amount to implement its project. The Kalikupan Law Group is a citizen’s movement imbued with the determination to mainstream environmental protection in the mindset of all stakeholders of governance, Navarro stressed.

GUEST. Tomorrow, Tuesday, please watch Sam Enchanted Evening from 8 to 9 p.m. over CCTN channel 47 or SkyCable 56.

Lawyer-composer Mel Libre will appear as guest performer. He will be singing at least four of your favorite love songs in the one-hour special.

BLUNDER. A government functionary here has committed a big blunder when she ad libbed that local media practitioners attend all sorts of gatherings even if they are not invited. If that was a joke, nobodylaughed, including those non-media people attending a program where the functionary was tasked to introduce the participants to a consultative gathering. And if the official thought she appeared cute with that aside, she was wrong. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or text 0906-9596888 or 0915-4992844).
