Speak out: Unsportsmanlike conduct By (Sgd.) Rey Orillaneda Barangay Quiot, Cebu City
Sometimes we expect too much of our elected public officials that we literally “entrust our lives to them.”
This was what happened when we decided to participate in a basketball tournament organized and presided by the barangay councilor of Quiot, Cebu City, who was in charge of the committee on sports during the annual fiesta celebration.
What was important at that time was for us and the young people of our small community to display our basketball prowess during the celebration. In this way, we expected to help the government in its program to keep the youth away from the menace of drugs and crime.
Despite financial constraints, we eagerly pooled our meager resources and participated in the tourney full of good intentions and expectations. Never in our minds did we think of anything “fishy” or questionable that would happen in the conduct of the sportsfest.
To our dismay, the unexpected and unthinkable actually happened. The good kagawad did not only display sloppiness in running the tournament but also tolerated unsportsmanlike conduct, like bad calls by referees, switching of players and the like.
Winning or losing is not everything, so they say. What matters is the example we set for our community, especially the youth.
Public officials or plain taxpayers, we share this common responsibility.
