Daanbantayan tops Cluster 4

Daanbantayan used its home court advantage to repulse Sta. Fe, 25-20, 25-17, for the Cluster IV title of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup yesterday at Daanbantayan.

“It (finals) was a very festive atmosphere and we had a very vocal and supportive crowd,” said Nona Catipay of the organizing Cebu Volleyball Association (Ceva).

Straight sets

Earlier, Daanbantayan defeated San Remigio easily, 25-6, 25-14 and then went on to top Group B after another straight set win over Medellin, 25-17, 25-14 to set up the finals match against Sta. Fe, Group A’s top qualifier.

With its townmates’ cheers amplified by a drum and bugle corps, Daanbantayan took the first set with ease, 25-20, before winning the P20,000 top prize with another win in the second set.

Though Mayor Ma. Luisa Loot didn’t suit up for Daanbantayan, she provided the moral support for her team.

“Mayor Loot was with the team’s bench in all their games, it was the first time that a mayor sat with the players in the tournament,” Catipay said.

Not to be outdone, Sta. Fe also had Mayor Rogelio Ilustrisimo Jr with them, though it fell short as it settled for runner-up honors.

Still, all is not over for Sta. Fe, as it advanced, together with champion Daanbantayan, to the Unity Cup finals along with the other Cluster champions and runners-up.

Next week, the first phase of the Unity Cup, which offers P100,000 to the over-all champion, moves to Mandaue City for the Cluster 6 elimination round.

Meanwhile, just like in the previous Cluster champions, college scouts went to look for players but weren’t able to sign up any.

Recruits

“Most of the players are already in college, and it’s hard to ask them to transfer schools and courses, and besides the coaches want to recruit the young players,” Catipay said.

In the Cluster 5 eliminations, scouts were able to recruit six players, including two 12-year-olds.

Other teams which have advanced to the Unity Cup finals are Carcar and Minglanilla in Cluster 1, Boljoon and Oslob in Cluster 2, Toledo and Badian in Cluster 3 and Catmon and Sogod in Cluster 5. (ML)
