USC returns to finals By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
The University of San Carlos-South Campus moved into the finals of the Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) division of the Milo Best basketball tournament, while Don Bosco College stumbled yet again, dropping a close decision to University of St. La Salle-Bacolod in the regional finals in Bacolod City yesterday.
Last year, the Carolinians, 10-time Cebu SBP champions, also advanced to the nationals where they won the championship, while DBC lost in the regional finals.
USC booked a finals seat after defeating Ateneo de Iloilo (ADI), 42-37.
Slim lead
Joseph Juariza dropped 10 points for USC, which protected a slim three-point margin, 27-24, at the end of the first half.
USC also got ample support from its holdovers of the 2005 national champion team, Bardley Bacaltos and Daryl Nazareno, who had six points apiece.
The national champions went undefeated in the elimination round, defeating St. John Institute, 43-24, and ADI, 37-22.
Meanwhile, DBC goes home disappointed after wasting a 27-21 edge at the half to lose to USLS, 62-56. DBC defeated ADI, 71-64, in the elimination.
In the first round of eliminations, DBC defeated USLS, 45-22, and seemed headed for a repeat win in yesterday’s finals before it collapsed in the third quarter.
The national finals will be held in December and organizers are planning to bring it to Cebu, where USC can defend its crown on home soil.
