Z Gorres restores confidence with KO win over Thailander By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
For Z Gorres, Saturday night’s impressive victory was redemption.
Gorres scored a sensational fourth-round knockout against Thai WBO Asia-Pacific super-flyweight top-contender Wisanu Pornobnum in the main event of the SGG Sports Promotion’s “Fight For Fame” at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
The win set up the ALA Gym fighter a chance to challenge for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super-flyweight belt. More importantly, it restored Gorres’ confidence after he was earlier criticized for failing to finish off his previous opponent.
Good fight
“My opponent gave me a good fight and I am just happy with the way I fought,” said Gorres. “This win redeemed me from my fight last July when my opponent (former Paba champion) Deeden Kengkarun only fought to survive.
“I made the criticisms after that fight as a challenge to myself. Now that the championship is near, I’ll double my efforts to win the title.”
After sizing up his opponent in the first three rounds, Gorres set up a killer uppercut with a punch to the side to open up Pornobnum’s defense. Feeling the sting of the punch to his side, the Thai fighter failed to see a second punch coming, an uppercut to the chin that caused him to fall for the first time.
As Pornobnum beat the mandatory eight-count, he disregarded the advice of his cornerman to move around, and walked straight into Gorres, where a fusillade of hooks met him.
Still feeling the sting of the knockdown, Pornobnum backpedaled and again opened his defense, allowing a smashing right to his kisser that threw him to the ropes.
Referee Teddy Alivio did not bother to count and quickly stopped the fight at 1:36 of the fourth.
Title fight in RP
Pornobnum lay helpless and motionless as his corner and ringside physician Jose Unabia attended to the semi-conscious Thai. After almost five minutes, the boxer stood up, dizzy.
The fight was an elimination bout for a title shot at the OPBF super-flyweight title next year.
“Definitely, we will bring the title fight here (in the Philippines),” said Gorres’ manager Antonio Aldeguer after the fight. “It could be at the Araneta Coliseum or here in Cebu. Gorres did well tonight and it goes to prove how good a fighter he is.”
Japanese champion Masayuki Arinaga will defend his OPBF title against Waenpetch Chuwatana at the Bunka Gym in Yokohama, Japan on Dec. 5. The winner is compelled to fight Gorres, as his promoter Sammy Gello-ani already locked up the title fight last August.
Domingo wins
Gorres improved to 22 wins against one loss and one draw with 12 KOs. Pornobnum dropped to 16-6.
Meanwhile, SGG boxer Michael Domingo kept his Philippine bantamweight title after scoring a unanimous decision win over challenger Rolly Lunas of the RWS Stable after 12 rounds.
The two fought 12 exciting rounds with no fighter trying to clinch. Ringside judges Jon Davis (115-114), Edwin Barrientos (116-114) and Ben Necesario (115-113) all gave the fight to Domingo.
Three ALA Gym boxers also won their fights. Robert Allanic won by majority decision over Roy Doliguez of the Marte Elorde Stable, Rocky Fuentes also scored a unanimous win over Bert Gawat and Rollen del Castillo handed Alex Aroy his first defeat with a unanimous decision victory.
Winnie Bartiquil of Cagayan de Oro City survived the wild swings of Jun Intor of the Triple X Stable for a split-decision win, Milan Melindo beat Juaren Librez by unanimous decision and Alberto Yap beat Ali Marapao, also by unanimous decision.
