Cops seize booze, weapons to keep peace

People trying to sneak in bladed weapons and liquor, plus the arrest of at least two suspects who were caught stealing electric bulbs and wires kept the police busy during All Saints’ Day.

However, Supt. Mariano Natu-el, the designated officer-in-charge of the Cebu City Police Office, and Supt. Vicente Loot, acting chief of the Cebu Provincial Police Director, declared yesterday’s religious observance generally peaceful.

Reports of shooting and stabbing incidents in Cebu City and one in Toledo City marred the occasion, but these were not related to All Saints’ Day, both officials said.

Learning their lessons from the previous observance of the All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, the police, with the help of the local government units, barangay officials, the military and several volunteer groups, designated entry and exit areas in all the 14 cemeteries in Cebu City.

Portable toilets and police assistance centers with paging sections were put up in the cemeteries.

The paging sections served parents whose children got separated from them while inside the cemeteries.

Paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Units Foundation were also on standby.

In the Calamba cemetery, at least three children were reunited with their parents with the help of the paging section.

Natu-el and Loot said double security was raised last night in all cemeteries in the city and in the province because it is during nighttime that more people head to the cemeteries.

The Calamba cemetery along V. Rama Ave. was given top priority since members of rival fraternities Alpha Kappa Rho and Tau Gamma Phi are buried there.

Calamba Barangay Captain Ester Concha and San Nicolas Police Station Chief Anthony Obenza, who served as the ground commander in securing the cemetery, however, were confident that the two fraternities would keep the peace.

At the Carreta cemetery, two men were arrested—one for allegedly stealing an electric bulb and wires, while the other was
arrested for acting suspiciously.

Around 11 a.m. yesterday, Dicson Villacorta of Barangay Mambaling was caught allegedly stealing a bulb and wires from one
of the tombs.

Barely an hour after Villacorta’s arrest, Jimmy Duazo, a resident in the port area, was arrested after he caught the attention of Waterfront policemen.

Duazo was later found to have a standing warrant of arrest for robbery.

He had tattoos that indicated he was a member of the BC .45, a gang inside the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center. (JST)
