Stabs fellow prisoner for abuse, but victim survives By Jovy S. Taghoy Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Fed up with getting maltreated by a fellow inmate, a 20-year-old prisoner at the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center stabbed another detainee yesterday morning.
Tadeo “Baki” Camacho took an improvised ice pick and stabbed his fellow inmate Edwin Bayno, 37, while they were at the basketball court inside the city jail’s compound at 9:30 a.m. yesterday.
Bayno, however, survived.
Camacho, who was committed at the city jail last July 21 for a robbery case, said he did not regret stabbing Bayno because the latter was allegedly very abusive.
“Wa ko magmahay sa akong gihimo. Mas maayo og ako ang makauna niya kay sa iya kong unahan og patay. Wala na ko kaagwanta kay sige lang na siya og pangdakol (I don’t regret what I did. At least I got him before he could kill me. I’ve had enough of his hitting me on the head),” Camacho said.
Bayno, a resident of Lucio Lopez Ext., Barangay Calamba, Cebu City, was first taken to the Cebu City Medical Center but was transferred to a private hospital for treatment of stab wounds in the head, chest and collarbone.
Late yesterday afternoon, Bayno was declared out of danger and was taken back to the city hospital.
Insp. Josephus Jeliang-gao, BBRC chief of operations, told reporters that Camacho and Bayno were at the basketball court when the two began fighting.
Camacho, in a separate interview in an isolation cell, accused Bayno of starting the fight by hitting his mouth, leaving a cut in his upper lip.
Camacho said that Bayno got hold of an ice pick to stab him, but he managed to grab the weapon and stab the victim thrice.
He said he has long harbored a grudge against Bayno, who allegedly hit him whenever he refused to run errands.
Camacho said the last time Bayno hit him was last Sunday night, when he refused to throw the victim’s garbage into a bin.
Jelianggao said BBRC is still investigating to find out what case to file against Camacho.
Camacho, who was detained at Brigada Dos along with Bayno and other inmates, was temporarily transferred to an isolation cell while the investigation is being conducted.
Camacho, a former errand boy of the Cebu City Police Theft and Robbery Section (TRS), was charged with robbery after TRS personnel allegedly caught him stealing assorted spare parts that the police kept as evidence.
Bayno, on the other hand, was arrested and committed at the city jail for a drug-related case.
