BAP goes to court
By Rommel C. Manlosa

The ousted Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) will file a complaint against the leadership of Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), which it hopes will “enable the Philippines to participate in basketball in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.”

In brief press statement yesterday, BAP legal counsel Bonifacio Alentajan said they will file the complaint at the Regional Trial Court of Manila at 10 a.m.

today. Named as respondents to the complaint, which will be filed by BAP executive vice president Christian Tan and deputy secretary general Angelito Alvarez, are POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr., chairman Robert Aventajado and secretary general Stephen Hontiveros.

“We have witnessed their stubbornness and their continued defiance with what was the right thing to do. I was informed by Christian Tan and Lito Alvarez that they will file a complaint against Peping Cojuangco, Robert Aventajado and Steven Hontiveros before the RTC in Manila,” BAP secretary general Graham Lim said.

“I told them you do whatever you think is right for the good of Philippine basketball.

Last chance

“If this is the last possibility that we can save Philippine basketball especially in the Southeast Asian Games, then I am giving them my full support. I may not be one of the complainants but I am with them.”

The BAP was expelled from the POC last June, which resulted to the Philippines being suspended indefinitely by International Basketball Federation. POC appealed its suspension twice, but was denied both times.

The suspension prevents the country from competing or hosting Fiba-sanctioned events, which include the basketball competition during the Seag, which the country will host on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

The POC has said it may continue with the basketball event in the Seag without the Fiba sanction.
