Delada to fight Montilla

Dexter Delada is preparing hard and long.

Not only because he wants to win the RP lightweight title, but because he knows his opponent, Fernando Montilla, is a tough fighter.

On Nov. 5, Delada, currently ranked No.2 by the Philippines, will challenge for Montilla’s title at the San Andres Civic and Sports Center in Manila, hoping his dedication to his craft would shift the tide to his favor.

“It’s going to be a tough fight I know that. That’s why I’ve prepared long and hard for this fight, which will bring me closer to my dreams if I will win,” said the 23-year-old Delada, who has 14-1 win-loss record with 10 KOs against Montilla’s 30-19-3, with 21 KOs.

Pacquiao’s partner

Montilla, a regular sparring partner of Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, is making his third defense of the title he won on Dec. 21, 2002 in Gen.Santos City against Ramon Molina. Montilla downed Molina in the second round and all of his previous challengers did not last more than three rounds.

Regional titles

The current champion is also campaigning for regional titles, the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation and the Pan-Asian Boxing Association (Paba) lightweight titles.

However, all of his stints abroad were failures, with the latest an eight-round KO loss to Somchy Nakbalee for the vacant Paba title last July 15.

The 5-foot-10 southpaw Delada on the other hand is on a five win roll, since suffering his first defeat to Nonoy Gonzales on April 18 last year. His latest victim was the veteran Rud 4K Kevkatche last Sept. 16.

Aside from the RP lightweight championship, Eric Barcelona is also putting his RP super-flyweight belt on the line to Cebuano Celso Danggod in the undercard.

Barcelona, who hails from Valencia City, Bukidnon holds a 30-7-4 record (10KOs) while Danggod has a 32-20-13 record with 10 KOs. (RCM)
