Pedrosa goes unbeaten, picks up event’s top plum

Ralph Pedrosa took the crown in the St. Martin de Porres Kiddie Chess Tournament over the weekend, besting a field of 27 youngsters after an impeccable performance.

The nine-year-old Pedrosa, son of local chess standout Ramsy Pedrosa Jr., won all his five matches to take home the top prize of the five-round Swiss system event, which was held Sunday at the St. Martin de Porres chapel in Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City.

Pedrosa capped his string of victories with a win over Philip John Olaybar in the fifth round – a match that ultimately decided the championship.

Olaybar figured in a four-way tie for the second spot with four points, and eventually wound up third after the tiebreak scores were computed.

Securing the second spot was Karina Martinez, who defeated Kevin Dale Tabayocyoc in the fifth round.

Martinez had 17 tiebreak points, edging out Olaybar, who had 15 tiebreak points, for the runner-up spot.

Fourth was Marwin Siaton with 13 tiebreak points, while Allan Pason was fifth with 11 tiebreak points.

The tournament, held in line with the fiesta celebration, was open to kiddie players from Lapu-Lapu aged 12 and below.

Winners of the one-day tournament, which was organized by Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association president Jun Olis, received cash prizes, trophies and chess sets.
