Over a kilo of pork, man kills his neighbor By Jovy S. Taghoy Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Three people died, while three others were injured in separate incidents in Cebu City and in the province during the otherwise peaceful observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.
Of the three fatalities, the stabbing incident in Barangay Mangyan, Sibonga was considered most closely related to the religious holiday.
A 46-year-old man stabbed and killed a neighbor who failed to give him a share of pork he would have wanted to prepare for All Saints’ Day.
The shooting in Cebu City that killed an ex-convict was considered a vigilante-style attack, while the shooting in Toledo City that killed a 31-year-old man is still being investigated to determine what triggered it.
A 40-year-old man was arrested early morning yesterday at a Catholic cemetery in Carmen town for attempting to sneak in an unlicensed Frontier revolver and a grenade, while a woman lost a cellular phone inside the Queen City Memorial Garden in Cebu City.
Pork
In Sibonga, Isidro C. Estancia, 46, did not make it alive to the Laoc Medical Clinic. He was stabbed in the chest.
Estancia’s assailant was identified as Engracio Recopelacion Jr., a neighbor who allegedly got irked at the victim when he failed to give him a kilo of pork.
Estancia had gone around the neighborhood to ask who would buy pork because he was slaughtering a pig.
When he found out that he was getting no meat, Recopelacion allegedly cut off the electrical connection Estancia had tapped from the home of Recopelacion’s sibling.
This prompted Estancia to confront Recopelacion, which led to an argument. Recopelacion later pulled out a knife tucked in his waistband and stabbed his neighbor in the chest.
Shot
Five hours earlier, Nilo Geralla alias Arnel Dumalaon, 31, of Sitio Cabugan, Barangay Putingbato, Toledo City, was killed when he took a bullet in the nape.
An unidentified gunman shot him and his companions while they were gathered in a plaza in Sitio Anislag, Barangay Canlu-mampao, Toledo City.
One of Geralla’s companions, identified as Rodrigo Tribunalo, 18, also suffered a gunshot wound in the neck. He was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
Supt. Leodegardo Acebedo, Toledo City police chief, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that no one from the group saw the assailant.
Ex-con shot
Past 11 a.m. last Tuesday, Arvin Russel Centino, an ex-convict, was shot in the head by an unidentified gunman while sitting on a bench along M.C. Briones St. in the Carbon market.
Centino later died at the Cebu City Medical Center. His elder brother Raffy was gunned down by SPO1 Adonis Dumpit in 2002.
Investigators from the Homicide Section said the attack on Russel Centino was vigilante-style. Centino was the 97th victim in the summary killings in Cebu City since Dec. 22, 2004.
In Danao City, Ricardo Talingting, 26, of Barangay Taytay, and his neighbor Ritchie Pantuja, 28, were taken to the Danao District Hospital after engaging in a stabbing-shooting incident inside the Taytay Public Cemetery at 10:40 p.m. on All Saints’ Day.
Police, however, said the incident was not related to the celebration, as it was a case of retaliation on the side of Pantuja, who reportedly held a grudge against Talingting.
Talingting told investigators that he was sitting near the tomb of a relative when Pantuja showed up and suddenly attacked him with an ice pick.
Talingting, who was hit in the left armpit, managed to pulled out his firearm and shot Pantuja, who was hit in the left side of his body.
Armed
In the neighboring Carmen town, SPO3 Enrique Fernandez of the 701st Maritime Police Station arrested Dario de la Torre, 40, after he was caught inside the Carmen Catholic cemetery in possession of one unlicensed revolver and a grenade at 2 a.m. yesterday.
De la Torre is now detained at the Carmen Police Station.
He will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and explosive.
