Chiongbian: No Evat in the prizes, hopefully
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, paper shufflers and pencil pushers, welcome to the world of Evat. As we awaken from October fests and Halloween parties, we are greeted with another foreign sounding word called Evat.

So how do we celebrate this or are we supposed to? Anyway, I was wrong when I said last Sunday that, “after a celebration of Witches, we have the Saints and then the Souls.” It should have said, after the day of Witches we get the Evat as the Saints go marching in and the Souls get another day of prayers on their graves.

Alta Vista’s 1st National Jungolf Tournament tees off today. Seventy-one jungolfers are vying for top honors in five divisions of the 9-17 age group. Many 18-21 years old wanted to sign up but were turned down because this year the committee wanted to concentrate more on the younger age groups. Next year, however, they will be allowed to join.

Also next year the jungolf committee is planning to open the tournament to foreign golfers and go international. The diehard Alta Vista jungolf chairman Nonoy Alba has guaranteed that the prizes will not be subjected to Evat. Can you imagine if this was possible, we will have to pay up to get our prize! It is not the end of the world so this must be Purgatory?

COMPLICATED. The more I think of how imperfect golf is, the more I think how impossible our traffic situation is. We have a columnist from another newspaper that complains about the traffic, and no one listens to him. I complain about the same people and things in the golf course and also no one listens.

There must be something to it and it could be the approach that is the problem.

Do you complain to the mayor or to Citom? Do you complain to LTO or to the department of highways? It is in this manner that makes it complicated. When you complain to the top, the top gets upset. When you complain to the working level, they get angry. Nothing happens.

I believe that complaints must be made to the application of the rules or laws rather than the person or agency. My current hang up is about bicycles in the middle of the road! These cycling fanatics think they are kings of the road. They ride in the fast lane, against traffic, weave everywhere and never stop for red lights. They have no business on the roadways and when you hit them it is your fault and pay you must when they get hurt.

They don’t pay road taxes via licensing and yet no one stops them. After applying the road rules on pedestrians, the bicycles should be next in line and I hope they get to that. They are hazards that one must go around. It’s the same story with pushcarts, pedicabs and tricycles, and definitely very easy to catch because they move slow.

GOLF TIP: Unless you are a single handicapper, the best place to put the ball on iron shots is in the middle of the stance. Having the ball at the back or near your right foot will force your hands to be too far ahead. This will result in an overly steep backswing and you will tend to hit the ball fat or with a big divot.

The backswing should be upright but only slightly. Make your arms swing first and let your shoulder follow with a turn. But don’t turn your shoulders too far around or else it will flatten the swing and will cause you to top the ball.

On the downswing, shift your weight to the heel of your left foot and then turn your left hip to the left. Always try to retrace the angle of the slope on the backswing, and the arms will swing the club down along the target line and into impact.
