DOST offers e-commerce to farmers in Mindanao

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 11 Director Madel Moran-Morados said electronic commerce (e-commerce) can be an opportunity for farmers to improve their livelihood and increase their income.

Morados said DOST’s Mobile IT (information technology) class project has launched last week a program that teaches farmers in Barangay Datu Salumay, Marilog district how to operate computers and take advantage of information technology.

IT class

The Mobile IT class project aims to help farmers market their produce and enable them to get the best price in global market places. It also aims to allow farmers access to information on agriculture on the Web.

Giving money is not anymore enough, said Morados, adding that giving knowledge and opportunities for farmers to have access to agriculture globally are equally important.

Tool

E-commerce is the latest business tool via the Internet. It is defined as the buying and selling of goods, services and information between two or more trading parties over an electronic medium, explained Mobile IT class project manager Edmundo Prantilla.

The DOST Mobile IT class project is in line with President Arroyo’s goals to provide modern techniques to farmers and fishermen, to increase their income and generate more jobs and opportunities in the sector.

“We have to accelerate our efforts to make use of information and technology to benefit our farmers,” Prantilla said.
Among the challenges that government is facing is to accelerate Internet usage in remote areas to help the poor and alleviate poverty.

The government is developing policies to ensure greater and cheaper access to information technology for the poor, said Prantilla. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
