Alta Vista team secures net title By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
There is truly no place like home.
Alta Vista’s junior golfers – playing on home soil – shone bright at the 1st Alta Vista Junior Golf Tournament, where they powered the club to register the lowest net.
Host golfers Edsel Tan, Jonvic Cogal, Gio Gandiongco and Irina Gabasa combined for 302 net points to claim the title.
Marcel Puyat, Miguel Tabuena, Celestino Laurence and Remo Fueg of visiting club Eagle Ridge, meanwhile, came up with the lowest gross of the two-day event, which drew to a close yesterday at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.
The Eagle Ridge junior golfers combined for 328 gross points in securing the title.
Bright spots
Gabasa, Alta Vista’s nine-year-old phenom, ruled the Girls Class D (9-11 years old) with 88 points, which went a long way in fattening Alta Vista’s overall haul.
Along with the Alta Vista golfers, Cebu Country Club’s (CCC) Kathleen Uy and Jyra Wong turned out to be the few bright spots in a tournament that was thoroughly dominated by the visiting squads.
Uy and Wong finished 1-2 in Girls Class A (16-17), where a Uy’s two-day total of 87 beat Wong’s 82 for the plum. The rest of the trophies ended up in the hands of the visitors.
Eagle Ridge golf whiz Miguel Tabuena, who, along with Gabasa, won a gold at the Chris Riley Junior Golf Tournament last June, dominated the Boys Class D. Tabuena registered a 104, beating teammate Remo Feug and Alta Vista’s Angelo Gandiongco by 12.
Hotly contested
In the most hotly contested division, Migo Ochoa of Riviera prevailed over Alta Vista’s Edsel Tan to top Boys Class B with a two-day 100. Tan, who trailed Ochoa by a point entering the final day, again fell short with 48 points yesterday against Ochoa’s 49 to finish with a two-round 98. Eagle Ridge’s Lawrence Celestino placed third with a 92.
In Girls Class B (14-15), Negros’ Imelda Piccio took the title over local entries Hannah Wong of CCC and Juliene Pacetes of Alta Vista.
The Girls Class C (12-1) title went to Riviera’s Maan Legaspi, who carded an 87. CCC’s Stephanie Olea (78) was second, while Iligan’s Nicole Barretto (57) was third.
Negros’ Jae Woo Yang ruled Boys Class A, with CCC’s Charles Hong at second and Thomas Ngo at third.
Charles Dulay of Negros topped Boys Class C with a 95, outdoing CCC’s Franz Olea (83). BJ Ybanez (82) finished third.
