Air21 blows Pals

For Shawn Daniels, it was a classic case of being at the right place at the right time.

With time fast winding down, a critical loose ball made its way into the hands of Daniels, who immediately delivered it to the bucket with 2.4 seconds left to lift Air21 Express to a thrilling 90-88 victory over the Talk ’N Text Phone Pals last night at Antipolo City’s Ynares Center.

Later on the same floor, the Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs ran roughshod over the sputtering Sta. Lucia Realtors, 106-90, in the second match of the 2005 San Mig Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference’s out-of-town doubleheader.

Air 21’s victory had serendipity written all over.

Block

With only 22 seconds remaining and the count tied at 88-88, Air21 set up for a final attempt that almost ended up in vain. Asi Taulava cleanly blocked a layup attempt by Air21 forward John Ferriols with about three seconds left before Lady Luck intervened for Air21.

Daniels, who got free after his defender, Taulava, left him to challenge Ferriols, then found himself with the ball in front of the bucket and promptly scored to give his team a two-point lead.

TNT called for a timeout for the game’s final play, but Willie Miller’s desperate 3-point attempt fell short as time expired.

The erstwhile solo-leader Phone Pals dropped to a 5-2 win-loss slate for a three-way tie with Purefoods and Alaska for the lead, while Air21 improved to 3-4.

Air21 (90) – Ritualo 17, Daniels 14, De Ocampo Y. 11, Arboleda 11, Ferriols 10, Tubid 8, Gonzales 6, Se 6, Canaleta 5, Fran 2, Dacia 0. Talk ’N Text (88) – Cantrell 26, Taulava 22, Pablo 9, Miller 8, Carey 7, Alapag 6, Gelig 4, Telan 4, Cardona 2, Washington 0, Avenido 0. Quarters: 26-20, 54-47, 71-67, 90-88.
