Honest newsboy returns bag with P19T, may get CH job

Dioscoro Collamat and his family live on his meager earnings of P100 a day as a newsboy.

At times, he doesn’t have a fixed income because, as the day ends and the newspapers are no longer as fresh as news, he just asks his regular customers to take his newspapers and let them pay later.

But Collamat of Barangay Lorega-San Miguel might find himself a new job as market collector if Mayor Tomas Osmeña finds a vacancy at the Cebu City Treasurer’s Office.

Discovery

Collamat was walking along Gorordo Ave. last Saturday afternoon when he found a green belt bag. He thought he could still use it, as it was in good condition. Collamat wondered why one would throw away such a nice bag.

He opened it and what he saw surprised him—several envelopes containing lots of cash and vouchers.

Meanwhile, William Tan, a security officer of Ozias Security and Detective Agency, a Manila-based firm, was already in
Barangay Talamban when he noticed that his green belt bag, which he held close to his chest while riding his motorcycle, was already gone.

The bag contained P19,000 in payroll.

Tan had accepted the fact that he would no longer find the bag and its contents. He thought of lighting a candle and prayed the whole Sunday that the person who will find it will only use the money in a good way.

But his boss in Manila called him up yesterday morning and told him that the person who found the bag and the money will turn these over to Mayor Osmeña.

The mayor presented Collamat before City Hall reporters as the newsboy returned the bag to Tan.

Osmeña asked Tan what he can give Collamat. Tan offered to give P5,000 so he will only have to refund the amount, instead of the entire payroll.

The mayor then told Collamat to call him if he doesn’t receive anything from Tan.

Capital

Collamat, however, didn’t have to wait for such call, as Tan opened some of the envelopes and gave the amount to Collamat in front of the mayor.

Collamat, married with two children, said he will use the money for capital so he won’t have to loan the newspapers that he will be selling.

Osmeña said he may hire Collamat as a collector in the Lorega-San Miguel Public Market if there is a vacancy. (GAC)
