Woman suspected of witchcraft shot dead

A 76-year-old woman was shot dead inside her shanty last Sunday night in Sitio Hagnub, Barangay Lusaran, Cebu City.

Maria C. Avila was the third woman shot in the last three months over allegations they were practicing witchcraft.

Her husband Matias, 77, found Avila with a gunshot wound in the back around 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to an investigation by the homicide section, Maria went to the shanty, which is a few meters away from their house, after having dinner with Matias.

Gunfire

Matias told homicide investigators that moments after his wife left for the shanty, a burst of gunfire rang out.

Matias ran to the shanty and found her already slumped on the bamboo floor.

Matias denied reports that Maria was practicing witchcraft.

Maria’s body was brought to Cebu Rolling Hills for autopsy.

Last September, a 96-year-old woman was shot dead while her daughter, 57, survived the attack in their hut in Barangay Rizal, Pinamungajan, Cebu.

Both allegedly practiced witchcraft.

Beatriz Gempesao died on the spot from a gunshot wound in the head.

Her daughter Lilia Ruiz was hit in the chest. The bullet went through her back.

Accusation

Insp. Edgardo Torres told Sun.Star Cebu they have yet to confirm if the two practiced witchcraft, as what the victims’ neighbors in Sitio Tugas, Barangay Rizal told them.

Sitio Tugas is about 10 kilometers away from the town proper.

Torres said that if it were true the victims were into witchcraft, it was possible the attacker was their victim and had sought revenge. (JST)
