Group owns up 82 murders, but how true is the claim?

A group yesterday owned up to 82 of the 102 vigilante killings in Cebu City.

A man who said he is a member of a vigilante group called up Sun.Star Superbalita and said they took the law into their own hands because he and his group have become frustrated with the country’s justice system.

“We are putting our lives at risk so we can help victims of robberies and drugs. We are asking for the public’s understanding,” said the caller who identified himself as “Sayaw.”

Sun.Star Cebu cannot determine yet the truth of the admission.

The claim was made on the same day the City Council decried the number of vigilante hits.

But genuine or not, the caller said they will continue with the summary executions, which have claimed 102 lives since Dec. 22 last year.

He said they have 50 notorious thieves on their death list and that Antonio Medina was their latest hit.

Medina, 25, was shot dead last Monday afternoon just outside the headquarters of the Mobile Patrol Group, where Cebu City’s Special Weapons and Tactics team also holds office.

Since the killings drew sharp criticisms from the different sectors, Sayaw said they have no support from the police or local government units. He said they themselves and their relatives were victims of robbers and thieves.

Sayaw said that 20 of the 102 killings in Cebu City were perpetrated by other groups that only wanted to exploit the situation.

Police assets are also “excluded” from their list. (JFT of Superbalita)
