Speak out: On Gayotin's lament By Elena Maramba
This is a reaction to the statement of Acting Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Chief Melvin Gayotin that: "We have no witnesses, no complainants. So where do we start?"
Of course, there are witnesses and complainants, but they don't want to help because they feel that the victims don’t deserve it. The lives of these criminals can’t be compared with the ordinary persons they stabbed or worse shot dead when they robbed them.
I am also wondering why militants condemn the killings done by vigilantes and not mourn those who lost their lives to the hands of criminals. Like the father who was stabbed in Colon and money intended for his family stolen. Like the girl who jumped from a jeepney just to evade the holduppers. Like a man killed while on a date with his girlfriend.
Anyway, to be fair to the militants, Gayotin should deploy his people in crime-prone areas to prevent the commission of crimes. This way, there will be lesser crimes and therefore lesser number of criminals that the vigilantes will kill. And this can be another way of trimming the tummies of policemen.
