BAP Training White-Team rips Red in exhibition

Samigue Eman, the 6-foot-9 prize find from Davao City, and veteran Leodi Garcia lifted BAP Training White-Team over its Red counterpart, 72-66, in an exhibition match at the Lap-Lapu City Gym Thursday evening.

The game was the first official scrimmage for players vying for slots in the BAP-RP squad, sponsored by BAP vice president for the Visayas Michel Lhuillier.

Eman and Garcia, who formed the formidable inside and outside threat for the David “Boycie” Zamar mentored and Eddie Ybañez assisted White Team, combined for 31 points to douse cold water on the endgame spurt of Red’s streak-shooter James Laygo, who scattered 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half.

Three-point plays

With Eman asserting his might inside the paint, the White squad jumped to an early 10-4 lead, with the former University of Mindanao Wildcats standout scoring two three-point plays against Laygo’s four points.

White continued to control the momentum before erecting a 46-31 bulge at the 4:14 mark of the third quarter before Marlon Kalaw and Francis Sanz carried the cause for the Reds as they countered with an 11-4 blitz, cutting the lead down to 42-48 with 47.6 to play in the third. Eman then made it 50-42 to close the penultimate quarter.

Garcia, who scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, combined with Danny Capobres to give White a 56-46 lead, 2:06 gone in the fourth.

Laygo, who was limited to only six points in the first two quarters, rallied the Reds together with M. Lhuillier teammates Woodraw Enriquez and Leo Bat-og to put the team within 61-66 with 1:50 left to play.

However, the Whites’ veteran guard Chito Victolero made a crucial drive 43 seconds later and sank three free-throw shots to preserve the win.

Last night, the two squads met anew, with the Reds eyeing vengeance in their final encounter before the final selection will be made at the Tisa Sports Complex.

BAP-White (72) – Eman 16, Garcia 15, Sayon 9, Alcantara 7, Victolero 7, Capobres 6, Caputolan 5, Cañoneo 5. BAP-Red (66) – Laygo 18, Kalaw 10, Enriquez 9, Bat-og 8, Sanz 6, Ocañada 5, Javier 4. Quarterscores: 19-14; 33-25; 50-42; 72-66. (RCM)
