Boom-boom 'Watch out'

Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista recently got a letter from Tanzania. It contained nothing but foreboding words.

“Boom-Boom will be shocked!” Emmanuel Mlundwa, the manager/trainer of the East African boxer Obote Ameme, told promoter Sammy Gello-ani.

Mlundwa backed up his claim with striking statistics and information about Ameme, who will try to wrest Bautista’s World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific bantamweight title on Nov. 19 before Bautista’s home crowd in Tagbilaran City.

“Obote is never afraid of any fight. His fighting weight is 53.5 kilograms. But he has been taking fights even at 59kg. He likes to fight,” Mlundwa said.

The fight record of the granite-fisted Tanzanian also speaks for himself. Like the defending champion Bautista, the East African is known for his knockout prowess.

He has knocked out 22 of his opponents, some of them outweighed him by at least five pounds and many of them not lasting beyond four rounds. He has lost nine times, while only five of his 27 wins lasting the distance.

Because of his punching power, Ameme has been known as “The Thunder,” a moniker that was also derived from his name – Ameme, which sounds similar to a Tanzanian Swahili word umeme, which means thunder.

Even Gello-ani, the ALA Boy’s promoter, is impressed with the credentials of the East African.

“Whoever gets hit solidly will surely go down,” said Gello-ani. “It will not be he who packs the stronger wallop, but he who can take a punch who will be the victor.”

The Tanzanian warrior will arrive in Cebu on Monday afternoon in time for a photo session with the Cebu media.

Also in the card is another WBO As-Pac championship between featherweight champion Victor Mausol of Indonesia and challenger Caesar Amonsot, who is from Tagbilaran City.

A total of 64 rounds of boxing and five amateur bouts will usher in Bohol’s biggest boxing promotion.
