First Seag gold for RP will come ‘in Mandaue’

The first gold of the Philippines will come in Mandaue City.

Philippine Sports Commission chief Ritchie Garcia is so sure that in Mandaue will be handed out the first gold medal of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games prior to the official opening of the biennial games in Manila.

Garcia said that Mandaue, which will host the karatedo event of the 11-nation meet, will give the first gold medal in the morning of Nov. 27 to the Philippine Women Team kata (forms) event.

“I was told by Ritchie Garcia that the first gold medal would come in Mandaue City. As much as I wanted to attend the opening ceremony in Manila, I’ll just hold my trip so that I could present the gold medal to the winner,” said Cheryl Ouano, executive director of the Mandaue City Sports Development Commission.

The second and third gold medals are expected to come in Cebu City in the dancesport event at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino’s grand ballroom.

Excited

“I am getting excited, to think that of all the host cities, the first gold medal of the Philippines hopefully will come in Mandaue City,” Ouano said.

Karatedo will be held from Nov. 27 to 29 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex, two days after Cebu will welcome the athletes from the 10 other participating nations.

The RP Women’s karatedo team includes Cherli Togday, beauty-queen Gretchen Malalag, Mae Iso and Cebu’s Luchie Metante.

A sterling performance from the karatedo and judo teams is expected after their impressive stints in international competition.

Ouano said she expects RP karatekas to win at least seven gold medals and the judokas five golds. (RCM)
