Fight against piracy saves company from losses

A SOFTWARE distributor in the country expressed appreciation on the aggressiveness of Microsoft in fighting piracy in the country, as this has saved them from bankruptcy.

According to e-Methods for Business Management Inc. (e-MBM) chairman Noel Tolentino, the company was struggling when it started distributing the accounting software Quickbooks in 1995 when the piracy rate in the country was at 96 percent.

“We are grateful to Microsoft for leading the fight against piracy in the country. The piracy rate in the country is now declined,” he told the press.

Microsoft has been actively campaigning in the country for people to use licensed software. Recently, the company has been talking with Internet cafes and offering them programs for them to be able to purchase licensed software.

Declining

Tolentino said the declining piracy rate in the country is one of the reasons why e-MBM is now aggressively promoting Quickbooks outside Metro Manila, starting in Cebu. The company has partnered with Cebu Filing Systems Manufacturing Inc. (CFS) for the distribution of the accounting software in Cebu.

CFS, owned and managed by Cebuana entrepreneur Estrellita Raya, is engaged in producing quality filing materials for document development management systems.

“From hard and tangible filing materials, we are now adopting soft filing products, such as Quickbooks. This is our first venture into the information technology business,” she said.

Quickbooks offers opportunity for companies to simplify everyday office tasks and focus on doing its core business, Tolentino said.

“An opportunity that is easy and tailored fit to the language of the accountants, businessmen and employees,” he said.

Tolentino was quick to add that the software was designed not to rob accountants of their job but to assist them in analyzing regularly the financial status of the company so that it would make sound business decisions. (JBN)
