Fishers blame RVAT for ‘hike’ in oil price
THE Panaghiusa sa Gagmayng Mangingisda sa Sugbo (Pamana-Sugbo) yesterday denounced the implementation of the Reformed Value-Added Tax (RVAT) Law and the oil exploration at Tañon Strait because these affected their source of livelihood.
Pamana-Sugbo chairman Victor Lapaz and spokesman Wilbert Dimol said that before the implementation of the RVAT Law last Nov. 1, the price of gasoline did not reach P40 per liter. But with the added tax, gas prices went up to P44.
However, according to the Department of Energy (DOE) monitoring report, the price of unleaded gasoline was P37.08 per liter as of last Monday.
Last Saturday, the country’s oil companies rolled back their fuel prices for the third time.
The DOE said the current local prices of unleaded gasoline and diesel are 21 percent and 27 percent higher than prices at the start of the year.

Fishermen use gasoline for their boats, but they are also concerned with the oil exploration in the Tañon Strait.
They said the exploration drove away the fish and destroyed the corals, reducing their catch.
They said that if a fisherman has a catch of three kilos and sell this at P70 per kilo, he will have P210 a day. But because the gasoline is bought at P44 per liter or P132 for the usual consumption of three liters, a fisherman will only have P72 earnings.
Pamana-Sugbo has more than 10,000 members in Cebu Province. (EOB)
