SpeakOut: Toledo City public market
By Ben Barabat
Poblacion, Toledo City

WEARY travelers and Toledanos now may now have a chance to take a glimpse of the newly renovated Toledo City Public Market.

From the rickety, old, stinking agora of old, the market has metamorphosed into a magnificent area for shoppers, a marvelous work of art that every true-blue Toledano should be proud of. To date, the said public market is being considered one of Cebu’s cleanest.

Among the facilities and amenities of the market are: a pressurized water pump to keep the fish and meat sections clean; a public address system for easy dissemination of information relative to the market’s day to day operation; a fully air-conditioned market administrator office.

Rules have been laid down for the smooth flow of market activities. A task force composed of 15 market policemen secures the market area.

Meanwhile, stallholders and their helpers are required to wear uniforms. This is in keeping with the standing policy of the market committee that every section should be properly identified through the uniforms of the occupants.

The once ubiquitous abattoir whose stinking, foul smell made the market an obnoxious place to visit has been transferred some kilometers away.

The changes did not come easy. Time and effort were spent by the administration of Mayor Daydee Zambo to transform the Toledo City Public Market into what it is now.
