Boom-Boom eyes mandatory fight
BOHOLANO sensation Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista moved a step closer to a world title fight after climbing up to the No.2 ranking in the World Boxing Organization bantamweight division.
A victory over his challenger Obote Ameme on Saturday will further boost his chances of securing the top contender status to the throne of Mexican Johnny Gonzalez.
Mandatory
Bautista, the ALA Boxing Gym fight who is a native of Candijay, Bohol, can earn a mandatory fight next year if Gonzalez could defend his belt against Mark Johnson on Feb. 25 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
Gonzalez overwhelmingly won the WBO belt after scoring a technical knockout over the disposed champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin last Oct. 29 at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
That loss ended the almost two-year reign of Vorapin, who was outpunched by the taller and quicker 24-year-old Mexican, who holds a 31-4 win-loss record with 27 knockout wins.
The Tagbilaran fight may be Bautista’s last in the Philippines as he will start his US campaign next year.
Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim said all proceeds of the Saturday card will be used for Bautista’s training expenses and travel to the US. (RCM)
