Fil-Ams advance in RP ITF event

FILIPINO-AMERICANS Riza Angela Zalameda and Denise Dy downed separate rivals yesterday to reach the second round of the $10,000 Holcim ITF Women’s Circuit 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Banking on her solid forehand, the 19-year-old Zalameda scored a 7-5, 2-0 (ret.) victory over Thai Varanya Vijuksanaboon, who was forced to retire due to dehydration.

Dy breezed past local Aileen Rogan, 6-1, 6-0, to advance against world No.512 and top-seed Taiwanese Hwang I-Hsuan, a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Fil-American qualifier Maureen Diaz.

“I’m just starting to get my rhythm, this is just the first round. I haven’t played my best game yet,” said Zalameda, who fired three aces to take a 5-1 lead in the first set.
