Just Jusi By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
COLLABORATIONS and interactions among visual artists aren’t a rare occurrence because by nature they are exhibitionist always wanting to show what they’ve got.
But when we talk of the artist as a working partner to a fashion designer, it happens only once in a blue moon. And when it comes, it’s always a special occasion warranting the preparations of a formal event.
And come it will for sure before the year ends: this second of December when designer Joy Bernaldez will show her jusi gowns handpainted by 21 of the most renowned of local painters.
Bernaldez takes the fashion world to Waterfront’s Atlantic hall where aesthetics and functionalism meet in a show dubbed Masterpieces. This is a showcase that will bring to the fore the fashion designer’s expertise in the employment of the jusi into the making of exquisite gowns.
The gowns are set to be her “piece de resistance” after having been in the design business for 25 years.
The jusi fabric holds a secure place in fashion having been, for a long time, considered traditional and formal , although Bernaldez has successfully made use of the textile for everyday wear.
The use of the indigenous material is a fine way to instill back our pride of being Filipino and relive nationalism as a people who are proud of their independent culture.
The message seems to be brief and simple, buy and wear Filipino.
And turning out native materials into products of world-class quality is in line with the business sense which tells us to position ourselves as a globally competitive people.
With Joy Bernaldez are the 21 Cebuano artists namely Mar Vidal, Jorge Lao, Bong Francisco, Rudy Manero, Ondo Alcoseba, Pronnie Cerna, Manuel Panares, Clint Normandia, Benjie Goyha, Tony Vidal, Jun Impas,Fred Galan, Dodong Bandibas, Gary Carabio, Maxcel Migallos, Celso Pepito, Pepe Villadolid, Andrew Barba, Adeste Deguilmo, Tony Alcoseba, Kimsoy Yap and Gabby Abellana who will rock the art and fashion scene next month and that will, for certain, be the talk of the town for many Decembers to come.
