Red Bull upsets Pals

THE Red Bull Barakos logged a huge upset yesterday after beating second-running Talk ’N Text Phone Pals, 91-89, in the San Mig-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Ynares Center.

Enrico Villanueva displayed a mighty offensive night as last year’s Most Improved Player tallied a double-double performance of 23 points and 15 rebounds in leading the Barakos to their sixth win in 11 games and secure the solo fourth spot.

Villanueva played like a man possessed in the third quarter, scoring 13 of his 17 second-half points in the period to keep the Barakos in the game when the Phone Pals threatened to pull away.

Best game

“I think that’s his best game so far in the conference. But we’re really anticipating that kind of game from Rico. In fact, we were expecting it much sooner but at least it happened in an important game like tonight,” said Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao in praise of his All-Star center.

Villanueva turned in 23 points and 15 rebounds, capping his sterling performance with an eight-foot jumper that gave the Barakos a 91-85 lead with 1:08 remaining.

The Phone Pals scored the game’s last four points and had a chance to steal the game, but Jimmy Alapag missed two desperate 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

“This is a crucial win for us. We really want to get things right the first time so now the burden of adjusting is on their side. We’ll see how they’ll work things out in a span of 24 hours,” said Guiao.

Red Bull and Talk ’N Text meet again tomorrow and Guiao hopes last night’s triumph raised his troop’s confidence level heading into their rematch.

Back to back

Import Quemont Greer scored 24 and had 15 boards to show the way for the Barakos.

The setback was the second straight and fourth in 10 outings for the Phone Pals, who lost consecutive games for the first time in the conference. (JSV with PBA media bureau)
