9 inmates bolt youth facility

Nine inmates of the Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth 7 in Candabong, Argao, Cebu escaped from the facility last week.

Five of the inmates were captured on their way to surrendering to the barangay captain of Hilasgasan, Barili.

The inmates decided to surrender because they could no longer stand the lack of food. Mosquitoes also feasted on them in the cave where they hid.

SPO4 Floro Vergara, Barili desk officer, said they did not know that they were tracking fugitives from the rehabilitation center when they acted on complaints from Barangay Hilasgasan residents about young people who would steal food and kitchen utensils at night.

For three nights and two days, they conducted patrols in the barangay. At 10 a.m. yesterday, they chanced upon five young men walking toward the house of the barangay captain. They questioned them and were told that they were from the rehabilitation center and that they were on their way to the house of the barangay captain of Hilasgasan to surrender.

One of the escapees, a 16-year-old boy, is a resident of Hilasgasan but he and his four companions chose to stay in one of the caves in the barangay rather than go back to his parents to avoid arrest. He said that at night they would steal food from nearby houses.

The boy has a pending murder case. His two 17-year-old companions from Dagohoy, Bohol and from Liloan, Cebu have frustrated murder and attempted rape cases in court, respectively.

His other companions, a 13-year-old and 17-year-old, were both rugby addicts and have shoplifting cases in court.

“Mu-surrender na lang kuno sila kay daghan lamok sa langob nga ilang gitagoan dili sila katulog unya walay tarong kaon,”
Vergara said in a phone interview. (They said they decided to surrender because they couldn’t sleep in the caves because of the mosquitoes and they had nothing to eat.) (AIV)
