16 days of activism against violence kicks off tomorrow

WORLDWIDE during the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women (Nov. 25-Dec. 10), states and local government units, including civil society groups, are encouraged to conduct activities that highlight women’s participation in bringing to an end domestic violence and other forms of abuse.

In Cebu City, the Bantay Banay Inter-Agency Coordinating Council (BB-IACC), which is composed of government and non-government agencies, is spearheading the event in coordination with the city government.

On Nov. 25, information booths will be placed in four malls (Ayala, Gaisano Metro, SM and Elizabeth Mall) and two universities in the city (University of San Carlos and University of San Jose-Recoletos).

These will provide the public the opportunity to seek information on violence against women (VAW) from BB-IACC members and Bantay Banay women volunteers who will be at the designated information booths.

There will be a brief program at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Plaza Independencia to formally open the 16 Days of Activism, followed by Movie Night at 6 p.m. The film showing will tackle the theme of domestic violence.

Member organizations of the BB-IACC have also prepared their respective activities: GST and Self-Esteem Youth Seminar (Women and Children Friendly Center–Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center), Nov. 26; Wellness in Mind and Body Conference (Philippine Mental Health Association), Nov. 26; Orientation on Sexual Harassment Law for Youth Leaders (Lihok Pilipina), Nov.30; Updates on HIV (Department of Health), Dec. 1; and Roundtable Discussion on the Updates of Anti-VAW-C Law with the Five Pillars of Justice (Lihok Filipina), Dec. 9.

The women volunteers of Bantay Banay, including gender and development focal persons of the different barangays of Cebu City, have lined up training and educational discussion sessions on VAW and domestic violence, anti-sex trafficking, children’s rights and responsibilities, substance abuse prevention and other activities with a two-fold message, “No More Violence Against Women.”

Every year, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is commemorated worldwide both as a form of protest against domestic violence committed against women and as an opportunity for increased public awareness.

This year’s theme, which is a continuation of 2004, highlights the importance of preserving the health of women – psychologically, physically and emotionally – so that women continue to become productive members of the family and the global community.
