Chiongbian: Tomodachi golf tournament By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
HAPPY Thanksgiving everyone! Don’t worry that we borrowed this tradition from another country because it’s for a good reason. I am sure you have something to thank about. If not, so sorry partner – get another life. So why should we eat gobble-gobble turkey today? So there would less of you turkeys running around, if you know what I mean.
If you are a Casino Español member, you are lucky because tonight you are invited to a fellowship night, complete with a free thanksgiving dinner buffet and draft beer. And that’s free to all your dependents, spouses and single partners also. If you have any questions, look for house chair Bunny Pages, who will guarantee you an answer and a big smile but not necessarily a free meal, heehee.
Today is the 73rd anniversary celebration of the Rotary “Mother” Club of Cebu and we will also have our turkey for lunch. Can you imagine 73 years of “Service Above Self?” No turkeys in this group! Before we go on to another topic, let me express our condolences to the family of our dear past president of RC Cebu, Ronnie Duterte. He will be sorely missed, very hard to replace and will stay in our hearts forever.
On for this Saturday are the monthly medals at Cebu Country Club sponsored by the Bad Boys of CCC and at Alta Vista. The member-guest Founders Cup tournament of Orchard GCC in Cavite is also on this weekend. So David Chan, Boy Limkakeng and I will be packing our golf bags for Manila. I will meet up with my partner Omar Cruz, who is too busy as national treasurer of the Philippines that our chance of winning will be in the raffles.
Montito Garcia took the overall honors in the Tomodachi golf tournament. The Division A team champions were Tadashi Ochiai, Marko Sarmiento, Andre Borromeo and Jovi Neri with an average net of 67.24. At first runner-up were Kazuo Hangai, Douglas Luym, Jimmy Sy and Leo Alvez. At second-runner up were Noboru Takahashi, George Hong, Max Borromeo and Rudy Lizares.
Division-B team champions were Yukio Murata, Joselito Parco, Jack Jamero and Manning Granada. At first runner-up were Masahiko Ogami, Tony Tankaw, Ang Chiong and Junie Cimafranca. Second runner-up went to Takenobu Naka, Willy Suarez, Tony Pineda and Eric Borja. Division C champions were Atsushi Kawasaki, Ben Li, Jojo Ong and Jacinto Limyutian. First runner-up winners were Kunio Ogumi, Chris Kokseng, Florencio Manglapus and Charlie Go. At second runner-up were Masanobu Sugawara, Ruben Almendras, Chito Misa and Pio Go.
The Ladies Division champion was Eva Hino with Rosita Uy as runner-up. The most exercised was the team of Gosuke Saito, Ben Ebrada, Boy Barcelo and Jun Florita with an average net score of 83 strokes. The spirit is willing but the legs are weak.
GOLF TIP: Many players concentrate solely on the putting stroke to be consistent with their putts. They don’t realize that the two key elements for consistency is in the grip pressure and alignment. Players push or pull putts because they change their grip pressure in different parts of the their hands. Too much finger pressure or by squeezing your fingers tighter on the grip during a putting stroke will cause the putter-head to close and make you pull the putt.
If you apply too much pressure on the heel of your hands, it will promote an open putter-face and you will push the putt. You should keep hand pressure constant through the stroke. But a great stroke and constant grip pressure will not help if are not lined up properly. Practice alignment by placing a club on the ground to align your stance, eyes and target. Your eyes should be parallel to the club and inside the ball because you are used to playing your shots that way, not directly over the ball.
