SMB trips Aces
THE Beermen fashioned out a 66-62 win over the Aces yesterday to break out of almost a month-long slump in the San Mig Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
In the other game, Omar Thomas scored 39 points and had 10 rebounds as the Coca-Cola Tigers held the Air 21 Express to a 19 percent field-goal shooting in the fourth quarter on the way to a 115-106 victory.
“Wins are hard to come by for San Miguel Beer right now,” admitted SMB coach Jong Uichico of the triumph that snapped their four-game losing streak and fortuitously came just before the All-Stars Game break.
It’s nice to end up winning before the break because we can work on some things that we need to really work on.”
Alaska’s own downward spiral is now pegged at five straight games and it was all due to the inability of the Aces to match the Beermen’s intensity in rebounding, defense and hitting the shots that mattered most in the endgame.
Dorian Peña bailed SMB out of another poor shooting night, coming up with the crucial points and big rebounds to finish with team-highs of 15 points and 14 boards, nine of them offensive.
Alaska’s Jeffrey Cariaso had a game-high 17 points and Reynel Hugnatan had 12, but could not offset the dismal seven points by Tee McClary, who re-injured his brittle right ankle in the first half. (PBA Media Bureau)
