Cebu’s Siso, Lagman win 2 each By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Team Cebu City junior netters Jacob Lagman, Sally Mae and Niño Siso combined for five championship titles in the 2005 Selangor International Junior Open Tennis Tournament yesterday.
Lagman and Niño Siso captured two titles apiece, while Sally Mae added one for Team Cebu City as the blockbuster event, which attracted some of Asia’s best age-group netters, drew to a close yesterday at Malaysia’s Kula Lumpur Tennis Club.
Lagman bagged the 10-U Boys crown with a spectacular 6-4, 6-0 victory over Ahmad Deedat A. Razak, Malaysia’s No.1 10-Under player, in the finals, and snared one more plum in the 10-U Doubles division, where he teamed up with India’s Duzbionjit Singh in defeating the tandem of Singaporean Colin Wong and Razak in the finals.

Niño Siso snared the Boys 12-U crown after thrashing Vietnam’s Syed Aguil Naguib, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals, and later combined with Indian partner Pearljit Singh to snatch the Boys 12-U Doubles crown with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 7-3 finals victory over the combo of Naguib and Indonesian Kamal Hassim Hassan.
Sally Mae got her championship hardware in the Girls 12-U Doubles, where she paired with fellow Filipino Janica Guba, of La Carlota, Negros Occidental, in claiming the title via an 8-2 win over the duo of Malaysian Shareena Gil and South Korean Sara Lim Wan Lin.
Sally Mae, however, fell short on her title quest in the Girls 12-U Singles after losing to Guba 7-6, 3-6, 4-6, in the finals.
Still, it was a sentimental victory for the three Cebuano youngsters, and it was never more evident in the words of Jacob, who dedicated his twin victories to his father.
“I want to dedicate this victory to my coach and No.1 fan, my papa, because it’s his birthday tomorrow,” said the 10-year-old Lagman, a fourth-grader at the St. Benedict’s Learning Center, after the match.
“I want to thank my papa for his untiring support, and also want to thank people from my school for their prayers.”
The Siso kids, the pride of the University of San Carlos South Grade Campus program, were backed by Osaka Iridology, Dunlop, Nick Pepito, Erwin Gok-ong, Boning Donio and Thirsty Health drinks. (GCM)
