RP’s Yabut makes final By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Christopher Yabut assured the Philippines of at least a silver medal in pencak silat after he logged the country’s lone victory yesterday in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag) competitions at the Cebu Coliseum.
RP’s other bet for the gold medal round, Adzhar Abdurazad, failed to see action yesterday because of the injury he sustained at the hands of a Singaporean in their quarterfinal match last Thursday.
Abdurazad’s failure to fight allowed Vietnamese Nguyen Be Trinh to advance into the gold medal round of the Men’s 55-60kg division tanding event. Abdurazad, though, snared a bronze for the Philippines.
Other finalists
Yabut, a two-time SEA Games silver medalist and Asia Pacific Games gold medal winner, joined teammates Marniel Dimla and Analiza Bea in the championship rounds, which will take a break today and resume tomorrow with all final matches.
Yabut, of Quezon City, defeated Yuhuna Bairaman of Thailand, 5-0, in their Men’s 50-55kg division battle.
The Indonesian team snagged a gold in the Men’s regu putra event last Thursday, while Malaysia took the gold in the Women’s regu putrid.
