Wong tops junior golf tilt
Sixteen-year-old Jyra Mae Wong fired a personal best gross of 3-over par 75 to win the lowest gross honors in the Cebu Country Club November Junior Monthly Medal.
Wong, a high-school senior at Center For International Education, was a model of consistency all throughout her game – making only three bogeys against 15 pars, while going the entire round without a three-putt.
“I was just thinking about hitting greens and saving pars when I miss,” said Wong about her stellar round. “My driver shots weren’t good so I will have to practice that and my short game for the Nike tournament.”
Wong is fresh off a memorable stint in the Chief Minister’s Cup in Sarawak, Malaysia where she shot a final-round 77, which tied the best score of the day. She will be one of the favorites to win her class in the 3rd Nike Southern Junior Classic on Dec. 22-23.
Tiffany Neri of Sacred Heart School For Girls Hijas De Jesus netted a 62, after a gross of 118 and a handicap of 54. This was her second gold medal of the year.
Wong’s 75 score was also good enough for a net 64 and silver medal honors in the net category. Naomi Tatara of Sacred Heart School Jesuit had a 67 for the bronze with a gross 102 to go with her 35 handicap.
A total of 22 participants joined the tournament. Nike Golf, through exclusive distributor Pacsports Philippines, was the hole-in-one sponsor.
