Young soccer team can only get better By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
BACOLOD City – The team may have fallen short, but things are looking bright for Philippine football after their campaign 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag).
The Philippines, going for just its second semifinal spot in 14 years, lost to Malaysia, 2-4, in its final game last week. It earlier defeated Cambodia, 4-2, for its lone win in the tournament.
Most of the key members of the Philippine squad that finished third in their group last week are still eligible to play in the next SEA Games, while others can play in two more.
The biennial meet limits the age of players at 23.
Fil-foreigners Filippo Braggio, who’s mother is from Cebu, Philip Greatwich, brothers Mark and James Younghusband, and former Carmen boys Michael Casas and Arnie Pasinabo are all 19 or younger and can play in two more SEA Games.
The Fil-foreigners have also expressed their intent to play for the national squad in future tournaments.
Tiger Cup
Among the tournaments being eyed by team manager Vincent Santos, also the vice president of the Philippine Football Federation, is the Asean Football Federation Championships – then known as the Tiger Cup before Tiger Beer withdrew its support this year.
It was in the Tiger Cup last year that the Azkals, also coached by Aries Caslib, won its first international game, 2-1, against East Timor with Emelio Caligdong scoring both goals.
“I get goose bumps every time I think about the possible line-up for the Tiger Cup,” Santos told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview.
