Tribesmen bag crown

Former University of Cebu (UC) Webmaster Alex Cainglet scorched hot while fellow UC alum Doroteo Almacin Jr. provided valuable support in Tribu Sugbu’s title clinching win in the National Basketball Conference’s pre-season tournament
NBC-ABL Rep. Ronaldo Puno Cup at the Antipolo City Auditorium last Thursday night.

Cainglet scattered 19 points and Almacin added 13 to lead the Skygo/SirLitz-backed Tribesmen to a 74-70 victory over the talented Rep. Vic Sumulong Ex-PBA All Stars squad in the knockout championship match.

It was team effort that allowed the Tribesmen to win the tournament.

“It’s all about team work. My team is a combination of youth and experience.

The ex-PBA All Stars were very tough opponents since they have the size and skills. But we managed to counter that effectively when the boys followed my system,” said Al Solis, himself a former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player who has played with some of the players of Ex-PBA team.

Key players

However, Solis admitted that the team could not do it without their key acquisitions just before the start of the tournament.

“It was very vital when we acquired the services of Don Yabut, Philip Butel, Francis Sanz and Christian Nicdao. They provided us with the ceiling and inside power since both Yabut and Butel stand more than 6-foot-7, while Sanz and Nicdao are excellent inside operators,” Solis said.

Tribu Sugbu was the only Southern Conference team in the eight-team field composed of four NBC teams and four Antipolo Basketball League squads. The Tribesmen won all their five games on the way to the championship.

“But honestly, we never expected to win this tournament since the Vic Sumulong team had been winning the tournaments here in Antipolo for five straight years,” said Solis.

Strong start

Tribu started on a high note, erecting a 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and continued to protect the lead going to the second half.

The Tribesmen went on a scoring rampage in the third when they tightened their defense on Ex-PBA’s Cebuano star Henry “Tata” Fernandez, who was held to only 14 points from his tournament average of 30, as Tribu Sugbu built an 11-point lead entering the final period.

The ex-pros started to get into the nerves of the relatively inexperienced Tribu Sugbu in the fourth as they slowly ate up the double-digit lead down to four. But that was the best the VS Ex-PBA players could do as the Tribesmen kept their composure down the final minutes of the game to win the title.

Tribu Sugbu (74) – Cainglet 19, Almacin 13, Yabut 8, Sanz 8, Bucao 7, Huelar 6, Butel 6, Nicdao 3, Ducay 2, Mercado 2.

VS Ex-PBA All-Star (70) – Regalado 16, Fernandez 14, Mendoza 12, Victoria 8, Bolado 5, Buenaventura 5, Pacheco 3, Reyes 3, Rodriguez 2, Cariño 2.

Quarters: 21-15; 39-33; 59-48; 74-70. (RCM)
