Rubio wrests crown By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Not even a slow start prevented Eleazar Rubio from claiming the prestigious 2005 Cebu Bowling Association Bowler of the Year title Saturday at the SM City-Cebu Bowling Center.
Rubio, a 30-handicapper, failed to break the 200 mark in the first two games but broke the trend with by toppling at least 200 pins in four of the last six games – including a 255 and a 258 – to snare the best mark of the tournament with 1,700 pinfalls, and win the championship by two pins over runner-up Art Dacumos, who tallied 1,668 in the eight-game contest.
Rubio’s cliffhanger victory put a climactic end to the year’s biggest Cetba tournament, one which gathered the monthly titlists for a titanic showdown.
Female kegler Mila Ang, who had three 200-point games, finished third overall with 1,626, just two pins ahead of fourth-placer Jake Yap.
Inday de Gracia, the tournament’s early leader after topping the 200-pinfall mark in the first four games, ended up with 1,597 to claim the fifth spot over Art Arieas (1,594).
Glenn Palabrica dropped 1,568 pins to finish seventh, while Joe Garces was eighth with 1,560 pinfalls.
Docdoc Gothong, who managed only one 200-pointer, finished ninth with 1551, and William Lao completed the top 10 with an eight-game output of 1,541 pinfalls. (GCM)
