Toral: Look behind the story
By Janette Toral
Digital Filipino

Last Tuesday, I got the chance to visit St. Mary’s College of Meycauayan, where I delivered a one-day workshop on Internet and E-Commerce Development 101. Twelve high school students and five teachers attended.

It was very heartwarming to see how excited they were to learn more about new Internet and e-commerce developments. We also evaluated their Philippine Schools Cyberfair entry and explored areas where improvements can be made using the competition’s evaluation rubric.

The whole exercise made the students also realize that they are all the same and of equal level. Some who were frustrated for being typecast as writers realized that they can do more through participative technologies, like blogs, where they can share their work.

The students ended up splitting the school’s sole entry, which showcases various tourist destinations in Bulacan, into three to allow more students to focus on the different topics assigned to them.

It also allowed students, who wish to become publishers of information, to focus on sharing data that they believe not many people know. Find the story behind the story. Dig deeper and find elements that not many people have seen before.

On Dec. 21, I will be in Iligan City National High School to conduct another seminar on Internet and E-Commerce Development 101. I’m glad that more and more educational institutions are recognizing the value of putting community developments and information online.

payFree Launch. This Friday, during One Internet Day Manila, Erick Kalugdan of Load.com.ph will launch the payFree electronic payment service. Erick shared that all members of Load.com.ph will be able to use the service to pay for commodities being sold by registered merchants.

Members who are interested to sell are just requested to submit their business papers. Once approved, they can already start selling online. As payment is received by the merchant, they can either use the money to buy prepaid load, buy products from other merchants or have it deposited in their bank account.

I’m glad that more and more services are coming out today with the aim of making e-commerce accessible to small and medium enterprises. Whether this service will click remains to be seen. However, I guess it is worth trying it out.
