Security up for Misa de Gallo
Police have come up with measures on how to secure churchgoers as the traditional Misa de Gallo starts today.
Senior Supt. Ronald Roderos, deputy regional director for administration, said the Police Regional Office 7 has ordered all police stations in Central Visayas to have their own security plan for the nine-day event.
Roderos said police should also coordinate with the Parish security groups in Catholic churches.
Meanwhile, Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal will hold his first dawn mass at the Our Lady of Fatima in Barangay Basak, Mandaue City.
Unlike the previous years when Vidal went around the province for the dawn masses, this year he has chosen churches in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay that will celebrate their jubilees next year.
The prelate is also celebrating milestones in his priesthood next year - his 75th birthday, his ordination as a priest 50 years ago, his episcopacy 35 years ago and his 25th year in Cebu.
This year’s traditional masses carry the theme “Becoming good and faithful stewards: solidarity, participation and service.”
In Cebu City, acting Cebu City Police Director Melvin Gayotin said the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral and the Basilica del Sto. Niño are considered top priority in their security measuers, considering the number of people who hear dawn masses there.
As both churches are the responsibilities of the Waterfront Police Station whose policemen are not enough to secure both churches, the Regional Mobile Group will be fielded as augmentation force, Gayotin said.
Patrol cars from the Mobile Patrol Group will also be posted in the churches, he added.
Cardinal Vidal is scheduled to say mass today at The Our Lady of Fatima Church, which will celebrate its 30th year next year. The church was founded in 1976.
He will go to the Christ the King Church in Alang-Alang, Mandaue City tomorrow. The parish will celebrate its 20th jubilee next year.
Vidal will say mass at the Holy Cross Parish, Basak-Pardo, Cebu City on Sunday. The parish will celebrate its 30th jubilee year next year. Next is Sta. Teresa de Avila in Poblacion, Talisay City on Dec. 19. Founded in 1836, the parish will celebrate its 170th anniversary next year.
On Dec. 20, Vidal will go to Mabolo’s St. Joseph Parish, which will turn 85 years old next year. It was founded in 1921. Next is the Mother of Perpetual Help or the Redemptorist Parish (Dec. 21), the Sto. Niño Parish (Dec. 22) in Paknaan, Mandaue City, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Dec. 23) on Magallanes St., Cebu City; and the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva (Dec. 24) in Barangay Pardo, Cebu City.
The Mother of Perpetual Help and the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parishes will celebrate their 35th year next year, while the Sto. Niño Church in Paknaan will celebrate its 20th founding anniversary. The Sto. Tomas de Villanueva its 140th founding anniversary next year. (JST)
