Tigers on a mission

Despite having only six playdates left in the qualification round of the San Mig Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference, the Coca-Cola Tigers are confident they can pull off surprises – including taking a spot in the top four.

From where they are in the standings, a top-four finish is a remote possibility, but coach Binky Favis and the Tigers are undaunted.

“I’m very fortunate to have guys who are willing to step up and defend,” Favis said earlier on his players’ resiliency.

First test

The Tigers’ confidence will be tested starting today as the Tigers battle Air21 Express in the hope of snaring their seventh win in 14 games, which would make the race for the top four spots even more exciting.

After a dismal start, the Tigers found themselves scrambling to avoid the survivor playoff reserved for the two last-placed teams of the qualification phase. But after a 73-67 win over the powerhouse Talk N’ Text Phone Pals, the Tigers suddenly found themselves on even ground with the Alaska Aces, which gave them reason to hope.

The Tigers have won five of their last seven games and are eyeing their sixth in eight outings with only three assignments left including today’s game.

“Our future in the conference may not rest solely on our hands but we’ll definitely try to clinch the best possible position going into the playoffs,” Favis said.

“With three games remaining in our schedule, I constantly remind the players to focus on getting better and learn from our experience each game.”

After today’s game, Coca-Cola will next tackle Sta. Lucia on Sunday and Red Bull on Dec. 23.

The Tigers are 2-1 against the three teams this conference, having beaten the Express and the Barakos, while dropping one to the Realtors.

In the nightcap, San Miguel will try to extend its win roll to five games as it takes on sister team Ginebra. (JSV)
