2 brothers shot in drug raid

Foure people, two of them drug suspects and the others accused of direct assault, were arrested in separate raids by Cebu City Police Office operatives in Barangay Camputhaw yesterday dawn.

Brothers Angelito and Ramonito Antonio were taken to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) for gunshot wounds in their legs, after they allegedly tried to stab PO1 Frederick Ybañez and PO2 Dale Efe, both from the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB).

With search warrants issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judges Fortunato de Gracia Jr. and Meinrado Paredes, the CCPO’s special units— CIIB, Special Weapons and Tactics, Vice Control Section (VCS) and Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU)—scoured Puroks 3, 4 and 8, all in Camputhaw at 4 a.m. for drug suspects.

Apart from Angelito, who resides in Purok 8, the other subjects of the warrants were Don Jeff Lebumfacil of Purok 4, Angelito Florita of Purok 3 and Julius Arda, 31, also a resident of Purok 3.

Clan conflict

Julius is a relative of Noel Arda who was killed vigilante-style in Camputhaw last Dec. 23, but was later found to have been a victim of a clan conflict between the Durano and Arda-Zamora families.

Lebumfacil and Florita were not around during the operation, while Arda and the Antonios were arrested based on the evidence found by the operatives.

Arda was arrested in possession of 12.80 grams of shabu placed inside 20 small, transparent plastic packs. On the other hand, three medium packs of shabu, weighing 14.70 grams, and 479 rolled sticks of dried marijuana were found in Angelito’s house.

In Lebumfacil’s house, the operatives found seven pieces of medium transparent plastic packs of shabu (14.25 grams) and shabu paraphernalia.

In Florita’s house, 14 pieces of medium plastic packs filled with shabu (15.33 grams) and shabu repacking and sniffing paraphernalia were confiscated.

Scuffle

The raids on the houses of Lebumfacil, Florita and Arda went smoothly. However, the three-man team led by VCS and DEU Chief George Ylanan that was assigned to implement the search warrant against Angelito figured in a 20-minute scuffle with the suspect and his brother Ramonito before they were able to get inside the house.

Ylanan told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that when they arrived at Angelito’s house at 4:30 a.m., they informed the latter about the operation based on the warrant issued against him.

Flowerpot

Instead of allowing Ylanan’s team to search the house, Angelito allegedly turned off the lights and assaulted Ybañez by hitting him with a flowerpot.

Ybañez lost his balance and fell, giving Angelito the chance to try to grapple for the policeman’s handgun.

As the grappling ensued, Ramonito, Angelito’s brother arrived, allegedly got hold of a kitchen knife and attacked Ybañez.
PO2 Efe, who was with Ybañez, then shot Ramonito in the leg to prevent him from hitting Ybañez.

The knife fell near Angelito, who took the weapon and tried to stab Efe.

Ybañez then shot Angelito in the leg.

Both Angelito and Ramonito were taken to the city hospital.

Ylanan said he would have wanted to help Ybañez and Efe but three other people arrived at Angelito’s house and tried to attack him, prompting him to fire warning shots.

Ylanan managed to arrest one of the three men identified as Benjamin Cuino, while the two others fled. (JST)
