Back to square one

A reversal of outcomes led to a wide-open battle for the championship spots in the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) 1st Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup at the Cebu Coliseum.

This after the opening-day losers bounced back yesterday to bring the four-team competition back to square one.

Bacchus-Harbour Centre held its ground steady in the final quarter to beat GenSan PacMan, 89-79, yesterday while M. Lhuillier dumped West Negros College (WNC), 97-83, to forge a four-way tie with a 1-1 win-loss slat each in the four-team competition.

The Jewelers, who lost to PacMan on Friday, won without leading scorer James Laygo, lead center Leo Bat-og and back-up point guard Jun Cañoneo, who did not see action for disciplinary measures.

Bacchus, which lost to WNC also on opening day, intensified its defense and went on to win the game at the free-throw line.

University of San Carlos bull-strong forward Enrico John Llanto stepped up in the absence of Bat-og as he scored 18 points to lead the M. Lhuillier scorers.

Also making great contributions for M. Lhuillier were Jayford Rodriguez and veteran forwards Danny Aying and Jessie Lumantas, USC point guard and Vernini Tangarorang, who provided ample support at the backcourt to hold off the fourth-quarter rally of the Mustangs.

M. Lhuillier (97) – Llanto 18, Aying 16, Rodriguez 16, Lumantas 10, Sayon 9, Enriquez 8, Piodo 6, Ocañada 4, Caputolan 3, Tangarorang 3. WNC (83) – Olarte 19, Tizon 18, Deocadiz 14, Baclao 11, Quilantang 6, Abaring 6, Merced 4, Vergara 3, Jangayo 2. Quarters: 28-22; 51-43; 69-57; 97-83.
