Junior player Jenny Rose Palomo had one of the stunning performances in the first day of competitions after she held top-seed National Master Cyril Ortega to a draw in the second round of the elimination phase of the Rose Pharmacy Open Chess Tournament at SM City Cebu.
With the draw, the two players joined nine other players at joint second with 1.5 points as 30 others remained unscathed in the seven-round elimination phase.

Second-seed NM Levi Mercado of Cagayan de Oro City leads the two-pointers after he defeated Daniel Ortiz in the first round.
Also with two points is NM Ernesto Fernandez of Pagadian City and Therese Gonzales, the only lady player among the leaders.
Among the local favorites who maintained immaculate slates were Richard Natividad, Voltaire Sevillano, Erwin Ababat, Carlos Moreno III, Ramsy Pedrosa Jr., Eden Diano, Anthony Makinano, Francisco Abugho, Kim Steven Yap and Rodrigo Alejandre.
The tournament, which will award P10,000 to the champion, continues today with top 16 players after the elimination round advancing to the knockout stages. (JCT)
