Purefoods guns for semis today

Games today
(Ynares Center)
4:10 pm - Coca-Cola v. Sta. Lucia
6:40 pm - Purefoods v. Air21

Purefoods will try to claim the first automatic semifinals slot today when the Chunkee Giants face the dangerous Air21 Express in the opening game of the PBA San Mig Coffee Fiesta Conference at the Yñares Center.

With a 10-5 (win-loss) record, the Chunkee Giants are just a win away from an outright semifinal berth.

Spearhead

James Yap and Kerby Raymundo will again spearhead the Purefoods cause alongside import Marquin Chandler, who heroically sacrificed for his team the last time out in letting Yap and Raymundo carry the offensive thrust in the Giants’ victory over the Sta. Lucia Realtors.

Aside from the three, also expected to step up today are Cebuano Roger Yap, Jr., rookie Jondan Salvador, Mark Pingris, Noy Castillo and Paul Artadi as the Giants eye their 11th win in 16 games and their second-straight since losing two consecutive games after the All-Star break.

The Express, who are coming off a 98-94 win over Coca Cola Tigers, for their part, will bank on import Sean Daniels, who may not be big on scoring but a giant in creating the intangibles that make the Express as dangerous as they are.

Arsenal

Also in the arsenal of Air21 coach Bo Perasol is last game’s Best Player Ranidel de Ocampo, his brother Yancy, three-point specialist Ren-ren Ritualo, veteran playmaker Winnie Arboleda, ex-University of San Jose - Recoletos Jaguar John Ferriols, the high-leaping rookie Niño Canaleta and Gary David.

In the opening game, the Tigers and the Realtors, two teams coming off losses, will try to bounce back from their debacles as they face each other. (JSV)
